New ownership for Chatham heritage house

A heritage house in Chatham dubbed “Haddington Villa” has been sold to a couple from Toronto.

Natalie Fitzgerald and Devin Schaffner left the city they called "home" for 10 years to find somewhere in Chatham with architectural and historic significance. The two moved into “Haddington Villa”, which is located at 90 Park St., in April.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent released a statement welcoming the couple. According to the release, Helen Witherspoon Charteris built the heritage home in 1877-1878.

"The architecture is considered to be an amalgamation of Italianate and Gothic Revival styles and features bay windows on three facades as well as a double door main entrance surmounted by an elliptical transom," said the municipality in the release.

The purchase of a heritage house does involve the responsibility of keeping the property protected and preserved. The couple will be officially welcomed to the community by municipal officials on June 3.

A previous owner of the home unsuccessfully attempted to repeal the heritage designation last year after a couple of very close votes at a Chatham-Kent council meeting.

The amount the heritage house sold for has not been disclosed.
