Chatham shooter pleads guilty, two other suspects walk

A man accused of a shooting in Chatham last year has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

After an agreed statement of facts presented by the prosecution and defence, 21-year-old Terry St. Hill pleaded guilty by video in Chatham court on Monday morning to discharging a firearm with the intent to endanger the lives of three male victims during the shooting on Harvey Street on January 26, 2021.

He was also convicted of possession of a firearm after being previously banned from owning or possessing weapons.

St. Hill was initially charged with attempted murder.

He also pleaded guilty in May to killing a dog at the scene.

St. Hill will return to Chatham court via video on October 13, 2022 to get a date for sentencing submissions and a possible sentence.

He remains in custody at the jail in Penetanghuishene after being transferred from the jail in Thunder Bay where he was arrested a few months after the shooting.

The charges against Brianna Gardiner, 19, and Rylie DeJonge-Vandusen, 20, were withdrawn on Monday. Gardiner and DeJonge-Vandusen were both originally accused of attempted murder as well.

The two other men accused of attempted murder, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because they were both minors at the time of the targeted shooting, are both on two years probation after pleading guilty to the lesser charge of aggravated assault a few weeks ago.

The court heard St. Hill fired four shots and that the shooting started with a social media dispute in which threats were made against the Chatham victims before the accused all jumped in a car and drove from Cambridge to settle a score.

The judge was also told the two girls stayed in the car and were not involved in the shooting.

Two publication bans prevent more evidence from being made public and are in place to protect the names of the victims.
