General Motors is building more electric vehicles, and making a massive investment in Ingersoll to do it.
On Monday, the automaker, along with the federal and provincial governments, announced a $2-billion investment in the CAMI automotive plant, and the return to use of its Oshawa assembly plant. The investment will secure thousands of jobs in each community, the company said.
“In Oshawa, Ingersoll, and communities across Ontario, auto manufacturers are stepping up to meet demand for clean vehicles and creating thousands of good jobs in the process. Today’s investment is an investment in our workers, our communities, and our future," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a news release. "Partnerships like these are critical to putting Canada on the cutting edge of the clean economy, creating thousands of new jobs, and making sure that future generations have a clean environment to live in.”
Both the federal and provincial governments are investing $259-million to assist the project, which will help the CAMI plant become the first full-scale commercial electric vehicle production facility in Canada.
GM’s first electric commercial vehicle, the EV600, will start rolling off the line at CAMI by the end of this year.
“This vote of confidence by General Motors in Ontario is more proof that by attracting game-changing investments our government is securing our auto sector for the next generation of workers," Premier Doug Ford said in the news release. "It shows once again that the cars of the future will be made right here in Ontario, by Ontario workers.”
Ford and federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne made the announcement together in Oshawa on Monday.
General Motors says it plans to introduce 30 new electric vehicles by 2025 while eliminating tailpipe emissions by 2035.
