A Canadian resident from Guatemala faces charges for allegedly smuggling people into the U.S. through a rail tunnel that runs between Windsor and Detroit.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested 53-year-old Juan Antonio Garcia-Jimenez on Tuesday. He appeared before a judge in Detroit Wednesday, and a bond hearing is set for Friday.
Last March, American border officials arrested a Mexican worker in the underground tunnel. He told authorities he paid a man to drive him to the opening of the tunnel and instruct him how to avoid the trains which transport cargo between Windsor and Detroit.
In July, border officers arrested two more people leaving the tunnel who said they paid the suspect $1,500.
The complaint has not been proven in court.
"Smuggling individuals through the train tunnel is one of the most dangerous methods I have seen in my career," said United States Attorney Matthew Schneider.
The tunnel is 1.6 km long.
