A local developer has proposed to build a net-zero subdivision in Colchester.
Horizon Group Ltd. has proposed the development on a 14-acre parcel west of Ambassador Beach Road, south of County Road 50.
The 56 eco-homes would be built with materials that would reduce energy use and reduce greenhouse emissions. The key eco-features include a 6-kW solar PV system, Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) walls, a highly energy-efficient heat pump, triple-glazed windows, and a Level 2 EV charger within each garage.
CEO of the Horizon Group Wing On Li says the goal is to make the homes as eco-friendly as possible while still being attainable for the average family.
"We are not talking about selling it as a million dollar home it is between $600 to $700 [thousand] which I believe it is really affordable, even by first home buyers," said Li.
If approvals are granted by the County of Essex, the company plans to break ground next spring and have the first phase of homes completed by the end of 2023.
'We believe that we will be able to attract a certain segment or a niche market which places a lot of priority on fighting climate change," said Li.
