Kylie Masse breaks Canadian record, earns 12th straight medal

Kylie Masse took home bronze in the FINA World Swimming Championships in Melbourne, Australia while setting a new Canadian record in the 200-metre backstroke.

On Sunday, the LaSalle athlete raced in the women's 200-m backstroke and set a new Canadian record with a time of 2:01:26. Masse's performance earned her the bronze medal in the event.

Following the competition, Swimming Canada reported that Masse "has won an individual medal at every individual championships and Games at which she has competed since 2015 – 12 straight."

“It means a lot to me and I think that’s something that I don’t often put in perspective until a meet like this, but it is good to kind of remind myself to have that confidence and continue to believe in myself,” Masse said.

The world short-course swimming championships ran from December 13 - 18. Earlier in the week, Masse competed in the 50-m and 100-m backstroke, settling for fourth and sixth respectively. Her Sunday race was the last chance to extend her individual medal-winning streak, and she rose to the occasion.

“I know that coming into this last day having my toughest event mentally to wrap your head around and physically on the last day of a long meet, to put together a good 200 was going to be a challenge," she said. "But I just tried to rely on my training that I’ve done and just continue to believe in myself to put together a good race.”

Masse competed alongside London, Ontario's Maggie Mac Neil, who set two new world records at the FINA World Swimming Championships.
