Solidarity walk in Windsor for Muslim family killed in London two years ago

Islamic Relief Canada is hosting a community walk in honour of the London family killed in a targeted attack two years ago.

On June 6, 2021, four members of the Afzaal family were run down by a truck as they waited to cross the street.

Yumna Afzaal, 74, her son Salman Afzaal, 46, his wife Madiha Salman, 44, and the couple’s 15-year-old daughter Yumna Afzaal were killed. Salman and Madiha’s nine-year-old son was the only survivor.

Aliya Samsair with Islamic Relief Canada invites all members of the community to the walk of solidarity.

"We're reaching out to the entire community to show a force of unity, a force that we cannot be divided and we're not going to be letting these tragic and horrific incidents go by without fighting against Islamaphobia as well as hate," said Samair.

The walk will start at the Bert Weeks Memorial Garden at 7 p.m. Tuesday. It will finish at the foot of Ouellette Avenue where refreshments will be provided.

Nathaniel Veltman has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one charge of attempted murder in relation to the incident. His trial has been set for September 5, 2023.
