Saugeen Shores opens dog beach areas

Saugeen Shores council has approved a plan to allow dogs access to two sections of the waterfront, with one located in Southampton, and the other in Port Elgin.

Council voted to update the by-law Monday night after receiving general support for the idea from residents through an online survey.

Pet owners can exercise their dogs at the waterfront from the Saugeen River to the High Street Flagpole. Owners can bring their dogs at any time of the day from July 1st to October 1st.

Dogs will be allowed on the waterfront in Port Elgin from 538 Izzard Road to Concession 6/Bruce Road 25. However, hours are restricted to between 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. between July 1st to October 1st.

The survey found the two approved areas received the most support in each community. Both Saugeen Shores Police and Town By-Law enforcement are patrolling the waterfront to ensure dog owners do their part. That means dogs are permitted to swim within the designated dog areas. When dogs are not swimming, they must be on a leash.

The by-law goes into effect July 1st. A prohibition remains on dogs accessing the main Port Elgin and Southampton beaches from May 1st to October 1st.

“This is a great example of using community engagement to guide policy,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “However, we need to stress that dog owners have a responsibility to follow the rules in these areas. That means exercising your dog responsibly, leashing and cleaning up after them.”

“Our laws and by-laws are there so everyone can enjoy our beaches,” said Saugeen Shores Police Chief Kevin Zettel. “I highly encourage all beachgoers to familiarize themselves with the Town’s rules. Our officers will continue to patrol the areas all summer to answer any questions and, if necessary, enforce those rules.”
