Payless shoe stores closing

Payless ShoeSource stores in Sarnia, Port Huron, and across North America will be closing.

The discount shoe retailer is seeking protection from its creditors in both the U.S. and Canada and will wind-down about 2,500 stores.

There are nearly 250 outlets across Canada including stores in Lambton Mall and in Port Huron and Fort Gratiot, Michigan.

In a news release, Payless said stores currently remain open and liquidation sales will continue until at least the end of the March, with most continuing through the end of May.

It's estimated the company employs just over 2,400 people in Canada.

Lambton Mall is also losing another longstanding store.

Play It Again Sports plans to relocate to Indian Road near Food Basics, and Hallmark is for sale but the store manager said no decisions have been made on the future of the mall location.

Lambton Mall Property Manager Laura Beecroft said while details of leases are confidential, their leasing team "is actively working on opportunities for our vacancies."
