Curtis Douglas scored three points as the Windsor Spitfires shut out the Flint Firebirds Sunday afternoon.
The dominant win was played before a season-high 6,098 at the WFCU Centre on Mickey Renaud Day. The annual game is played in memory of Spitfires captain Mickey Renaud, who died suddenly ten years ago Sunday of an undiagnosed heart condition.
The Spits now have 57 points in the OHL Western Conference and the final playoff spot.
Michael DiPietro stopped all 20 Flint shots he faced for his sixth shutout of the season, matching his total from last season.
Windsor put the game away early with a whopping six goals in the first period alone. Luke Kutkevicius started the route at 5:01 with his seventh goal of the season. This was followed 26 seconds later by a score from William Sirman. Douglas scored his 16th goal of the year at 9:56 for a 3-0 Windsor lead. Three more goals came later in the period over a three-minute span, in order from Tyler Angle, Cody Morgan and Thomas Stevenson.
Flint goalie Garrett Forrest was pulled after the Angle goal and replaced with Luke Cavallin. They combined for 41 saves in the game.
There was no scoring in the second period despite Windsor outshooting Flint 20-9. Morgan added a goal in the third period for good measure.
The Spitfires, who have earned seven points in their last four games, travel to London Monday for a Family Day matinee against the rival Knights.
