Dog shot and killed by Windsor police officer

A Windsor woman is heartbroken after a Windsor police officer shot and killed her dog in her own backyard.

According to Diane Scott, the police arrived at her home to look for someone who was visiting her son. When they knocked on her front door, she let her dog, Chloe, out the backdoor before answering.

She says she routinely does this because though her dog is friendly she can look intimidating. What Scott did not realize was two Windsor police officers were already in her backyard.

"She's a Rottweiler-Doberman so she looks pretty scary but she's pretty friendly," said Scott. "They didn't know and they just shot her as she was running towards them."

Scott says police immediately told her to tend to her dog and then brought the dog to the veterinarian where she underwent emergency surgery. Chloe did not survive the operation.

"I want to make this public because this is just not right. You could have tased the dog, you could have pepper sprayed the dog, you didn't have to shoot and kill the dog," said Scott.

Scott indicated she still doesn't know why police were at her house for the man visiting her son but to her knowledge, the man did not have any weapons.

"I don't even know what they were looking for him for. But that has nothing to do with me. You come to my house and you go in my backyard and you kill my dog. I just don't think it was right," said Scott.

She now has a $3,000 bill from the veterinarian for the unsuccessful surgery plus any cremation costs. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover the bills. As of Friday morning, it had raised over $2,600.

In a release late Thursday evening, Windsor Police Constable Talya Natyshak confirmed that an officer fatally wounded a dog during an investigation at a home on Lynngrove Court in the Forest Glade area. Police offered no other details about the situation other than that it's still under investigation.
