The Ontario Provincial Police is conducting its annual move over campaign this holiday weekend.
Police said despite Ontario's Move Over law having been in place now for 20 years, each year hundreds of drivers ignore the rules of the road and fail to move over for emergency vehicles with their lights activated.
In 2022, OPP laid 846 charges against drivers who were in a position to, but failed to, slow down and move over a lane. So far this year, over 600 such charges have been handed out by provincial police.
Police are reminding motorists to pay attention to the road and roadside ahead of you when travelling this long weekend.
Failure to move over could result in a fine of up to $2,000 and three demerit points upon conviction.
