Point Pelee National Park reopens, set to close again in January

Parks Canada reopened Point Pelee National Park on Sunday after the first week of a deer cull wrapped up.

Parks Canada and the Caldwell First Nation are carrying out a Hyperabundant Deer Management Program in the park. It incudes monitoring the ecosystem, species at risk, deer populations, and reducing the number of white-tailed deer to a sustainable level.

The program allows the Caldwell First Nation to mentor youth and strengthen traditional ties to the land. That expertise is also shared with Parks Canada.

The second week of the program is scheduled for next month, so the park will close again between January 19 and 26.

Parks Canada is responsible for protecting the ecological integrity of national parks across Canada.
