Those living near or own businesses not far from Optimist Park can come to a public meeting on Thursday night to learn how the City of Windsor is managing its oak swamp ecosystem.
As the name suggests, oak swamps are dominated by oak trees. They can also include maples, hickories, shrubs, and ground cover.
The meeting at the Optimist Community Centre on Ypres Avenue starts at 5:30 p.m. and should finish around 7:30 p.m. The city's naturalist will be there to answer questions from the public about strategies to keep it healthy.
The city said invasive species like the European Buckthorn threaten the biodiversity and health of natural areas in the city. The small tree is native to Europe and can overwhelm a habitat.
The city wants to explain how it will control invasive species and how using prescribed burns can protect the oak swamp.
