Health unit celebrates 15 local schools for being healthy

Fifteen schools in Windsor-Essex have earned their National Healthy Schools Certification.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit named the schools this week.

The National Health Schools Certification recognizes school communities for promoting the health and well-being of staff, students and the broader community. During the last school year, more than 280,000 students from 392 schools across Canada participated in the certification process by forming wellness committees and identifying priorities, including healthy eating, physical activity, injury prevention, growth and development, and substance use awareness and prevention.

Six schools are with the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board. Catholic Central High School, Notre Dame Catholic School, St. Anne French Immersion Catholic School, St. Andre French Immersion Catholic School, Stella Maris Catholic School, and W.J. Langlois Catholic School all earned Gold level certification.

At the Greater Essex County District School Board, James L. Dunn Public School, W.F. Heran Academy Elementary School, Tecumseh Vista Academy Elementary and Secondary Schools, and Riverside Secondary School also received Gold level certifications.

Four other schools that earned the honour are with Conseil scolaire catholique Providence school board. Gold level certification was awarded to Ecole elementaire catholique Monseigneur Augustin-Caron, Ecole elementaire catholique Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and Ecole elementaire catholique Sainte-Therese. Ecole secondaire catholique l'Essor was certified.
