First Windsor International Black Film Festival coming this summer

The first Windsor International Black Film Festival being held this August will celebrate Black film-makers and storytellers.

Between August 16-18, the festival will feature 10-15 films from Windsor, Canada, and around the world. The films will be selected from 50 film submissions and will include feature films, short films and documentaries.

"The vision is to give those Blacks that have not been able to express themselves clearly to help them, to encourage them and promote them," said Hermes Fomutar, festival president. "To be able to produce films and especially films that reflect Black values, that reflect Black culture, their experiences, their history and where they want to get to."

In addition to showing the films, the festival will host discussion panels, an awards night, and film-maker workshops.

While the festival is celebrating Black film-makers, the founder wants to ensure people know the festival is for everyone.

"We're telling these stories from a victorious place. From an inclusive place that's what I mean by it is a safe place, don't come in looking at 'I'm going to see a Black film' no, you're coming to hear and watch an authentic story of some set of people," said Queen Amina.

For more information on the festival's line-up and to purchase tickets visit the Windsor International Black Film Festival website. The festival will be held at the Armouries Theatre.
