Undeclared peanut leads to instant noodle recall

A specific brand of instant noodles sold in Ontario is being recalled due to undeclared peanuts, which could trigger an allergic reaction in some consumers.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the recall on Wednesday of Five Continents International Ltd's Baixiang brand chicken soup flavor instant noodle and instant noodles artificial pork bone soup flavor. The affected products were sold in packages of five with the UPC of 6 935270 34198 8, 6 935270 641988, and 6 935270 64197.

"The affected products are being recalled from the marketplace because they contain peanut which is not declared on the label," the CFIA said in a statement. "Do not consume recalled products to which you are allergic or sensitive as they may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction, Do not serve, use, sell or distribute recalled products."

The agency recommends anyone who has any of the recalled products to either throw them out or return them to the store where they were purchased. In addition to being sold in Ontario, the recalled noodles were also distributed in Alberta and British Columbia.

The recall was triggered by a consumer complaint. To-date, there have been no reported reactions from people who ate the affected product.

The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation in relation to the labelling error and warns this could lead to other product recalls.
