LaSalle Police warn residents that just because you're not seeing as many coyotes this year doesn't mean they're not around.
The police service said it received fewer calls about coyotes at the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022.
Now that coyotes are entering their breeding season, which runs from January until the end of March, they may be bolder and more protective of their territory.
Police remind residents unless a coyote poses an imminent threat, do not call 911. If you need to, call the non-emergency line at 519-969-5210.
The Ministry of Natural Resources had several tips to discourage coyotes from coming on your property, including using enclosed garbage and composting bins, keeping pet food indoors, and using motion-sensitive lighting and sprinkler systems.
It is illegal to use poisons or adhesives to kill, capture, or injure coyotes.
It also suggests keeping dogs inside at night and cleaning up after your dog. Coyotes are attracted to the smell of dog feces.
