Windsor police clarify reporting guidelines for shoplifting

Windsor police have reminded residents that there are no restrictions on filing a report for retail theft.

Police have addressed reports that came out last week concerning the rollout of an updated reporting tool. Residents are assured that police will still take all retail theft complaints.

"On September 24, 2024, we introduced an updated version of our online reporting tool," read a release from the Windsor police's X account. "The only change we made to our online reporting process pertains specifically to businesses who wish to report a theft but not pursue charges against suspects."

In that case, company representatives should call the Windsor police's Retail Theft Coordinator at (519) 255-6700, ext. 4113, to provide additional information or book an in-person appointment.

Police said that the online reporting update allows investigators to collect information more effectively, and deploy resources where they are most needed.
