The UHC Hub of Opportunities is honouring long-time board member and community advocate Gary Parent.
The UHC's Resource Centre will now become the Gary Parent Employment Resource Centre. The new name, along with Parent's photo, was unveiled Friday morning with his family present, along with members of the Unifor Local 444.
"For the family, it's an honour. If Dad even remotely knew what he did within the community, I don't think he ever really realized all the people that he touched, the organizations. To have this as an everlasting tribute to Dad is truly wonderful," said Jason Parent.
Parent, the former president of the Windsor and District Labour Council, was known for his commitment to the community and contributed to efforts like fighting poverty, the environment, and the health and well-being of children and youth. He passed away in May of this year.
The UHC- Hub of Opportunities achieved many milestones while Parent was on the board, including location expansion and launching the community kitchen.
"It's a very emotional day for me. I worked with Gary for 24 years," said June Muir, CEO of the UHC. "When you look at this centre, he was part of this, he made a lot of this happen. We worked together, this is Gary, and I'm so glad we could recognize him because he definitely deserves this honour."
