Application process begins to fill vacant public board seat

The English-language public school board will go to the public to fill a seat recently vacated by a resignation.

During a special meeting on Tuesday afternoon, the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) debated a plan to begin an application process to fill the seat left open by the resignation of Trustee Sarah Cipkar.

Cipkar was first elected in 2018 and represented Windsor Wards 3, 4, and 10. She resigned from the board two weeks ago, but the board agreed to accept the resignation at its Tuesday meeting.

The application deadline is noon on December 10, so a comprehensive list of candidates would be ready for review before the winter holiday break.

Then, trustees can agree on a shortlist of candidates to be interviewed.

Provincial law requires that a trustee's vacant seat be filled within 90 days of the seat being declared vacant, thus placing the GECDSB's deadline at February 16, 2025.

Board chair Gayle Simko-Hatfield said she hoped to have a posting ready by the end of this week.

Cipkar resigned from her position to devote her attention to other "personal and professional responsibilities".

"Ultimately, due to my constrained capacity, I feel that it is in the best interests of the families of Windsor-Essex for another community member to bring forward the voices needed to advocate for this generation of students," wrote Cipkar, in her letter posted on her Facebook page.
