Lakeshore Fire issues warning about off-brand lithium-ion batteries

Off-brand lithium-ion batteries used in remote-controlled cars and phones may save you a few bucks in the short run, but Lakeshore's fire department warns they could prove very expensive in the long run.

The Lakeshore Fire Department is sounding the alarm about the batteries after those batteries sparked fires on three properties in the municipality, causing $1-million in damage. It says the batteries can overheat, ignite, or explode if improperly charged.

"The growth of consumer technology in households has added a bit of extra risk with lithium-ion batteries," said Fire Chief Jason Suchiu. "We're sharing information about these incidents to ensure our residents know the risks and take steps to keep their homes safe, especially around the holiday season as we purchase or receive gifts that include li-ion batteries."

Fire officials have tips to avoid a fire, including buying batteries directly from the manufacturer, never leaving charging batteries unattended, and if the battery appears damaged, gives off an odour, swells, changes colour, or makes a popping sound, stop using it. It recommends keeping those batteries in fireproof bags.
