Police launch focused cross-sector initiative at 920 Ouellette

After continued success in the Glengarry Avenue neighbourhood, the Windsor Police Service is launching a similar initiative at 920 Ouellette Avenue.

Windsor Police report they get frequent calls from this location. Most of the calls are non-criminal in nature including well-being checks, ambulance assistance and non-violent persons in crisis.

The cross-sector initiative aims to bring human and health services to the building to free up police for other urgent calls in the city.

“As we launch this cross-sectoral initiative at 920 Ouellette, I look forward to building stronger connections with residents and supporting our health and human services sector colleagues in the neighbourhood so they can do their jobs safely,” said Chief Jason Bellaire. “These outcomes are only possible when we use modern strategies to address modern challenges, and I am grateful for the dedication of our members and community partners.”

The initiative kicked off this week when the Problem-Oriented-Policing (POP) Unit conducted a focused enforcement initiative. Officers issued two arrest warrants for charges of drug trafficking and assault.

The Nurse Police Team and Crisis Response Team will conduct a needs assessment at the building later this week.

In the first two months of the Glengarry Avenue initiative reports of violent crimes were down 18.7 per cent and reports of drug crimes were down 37.5 per cent.
