Postal union calls strike after Ottawa allows Canada Post to curb deliveries

The ongoing saga between Canada Post and the union representing its employees has taken another turn.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) confirmed via its official website that its employees are walking out.

"In response to the Government’s attack on our postal service and workers, effective immediately, all CUPW members at Canada Post are on a nationwide strike," read the statement.

This is the second time the CUPW announced a walkout in the same labour dispute. The union went on a nationwide strike last year.

In a statement Thursday night, Canada Post said the service will not process mail.

"The Corporation is disappointed that the union chose to escalate their strike activity, which will further deteriorate Canada Post’s financial situation," read the statement. "Canada Post’s operations will shut down during a national strike, affecting millions of Canadians and businesses across the country."

The union represents some 55,000 workers across Canada.

The decision by the union to strike again came after the federal government announced that it would allow the Crown corporation to curb deliveries in an effort to help Canada Post's financial position.

The carrier will be permitted to stop daily deliveries to homes, close or reconfigure some post offices, and deliver mail by ground rather than by air.

"This combination of delivering fewer letters to more addresses has led to increased service costs, declining revenues, and mounting financial losses," read a separate statement from Canada Post, sent earlier on Thursday. "Canada Post recently reported a second-quarter loss of $407-million, marking the Corporation's largest loss before tax in a single quarter. From 2018 to the second quarter of 2025, the company has posted cumulative losses from operations of more than $5-billion."
