More gas is bubbling up in downtown Wheatley, and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent is investigating.
Officials said a gas odour is coming from an area behind the Wheatley Public Library branch at 35 Talbot Road West once again, and the public can expect to see an increased presence in the area.
On Tuesday morning, the municipality said that crews are on scene investigating and will be fencing off the area out of an abundance of caution.
"Small amounts of gas in the soil have been detected; however, there is no risk to the public at this time," said officials.
A water well responsible for leaking hydrogen sulfide gas behind the Wheatley Library in late June was plugged. Gas and water also bubbled up from an area behind the Chatham-Kent Library Branch on Talbot Street West at that time, forcing residents out of their homes and businesses. No word of an evacuation this time.
Administration notified councillors in July about several unknowns, including the gas possibly finding another route if the water well was capped.
The fire chief said at the time that there were a total of six gas leaks between June 26 and the "most notable" on Canada Day.
The Wheatley Public Library branch remains open to the public with regular hours.
The municipality noted that updates will be provided should the situation change.
