Electric vehicle users will soon have to pay to charge their vehicles at public charging stations in Tecumseh.
The town has 14 public charging stations throughout the municipality at Town Hall and parks like Lakewood Park South, McAuliffe Park, and Optimist Park.
Starting January 15, 2026, there will be an hourly charge fee of $2 until full charge and an hourly idle fee of $5, with a 30-minute grace period, post full charge.
The idle fee is to being implemented in an effort to encourage drivers to exit the space once their vehicle is fully charged.
Town administration has not estimated how much revenue the municipality will generate with the new user fee system. All revenue will be used to offset utility costs for the program with surplus going to energy conservation and demand Management projects.
Since Tecumseh first started installing EV charging stations in 2023, there has been 8,701 charging sessions with nearly 38,576 hours of charge time.
