Health unit issues cold warning for Friday

With the temperature expected to fall to -15 C with a windchill of -24 C in the wee hours of Friday morning, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit has issued a cold weather warning.

Those are issued whenever the temperature dips to -15 C or colder.

The health unit says anyone could be at risk from extreme cold, but older adults, infants and young children, people who work outdoors, those experiencing homelessness, and those suffering pre-existing conditions like heart disease are especially vulnerable.

Frostbite is possible. It is when both the skin and the underlying tissue are frozen, causing permanent damage. Hypothermia, also a risk, happens when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it. Anyone experiencing shivering, confusion, and uncoordinated movements should seek medical attention immediately.

Health officials don't recommend drinking alcohol before going outside because it can give you a false sense of warmth. They do suggest dressing warmly, in layers, and covering as much exposed skin as possible, ensuring your vehicle is well-maintained, and making sure your home heating system is operational.
