Tigers name Greenberg as their new general manager

The Detroit Tigers have gone to the Windy City to find their new general manager.

The MLB club announced Thursday that it had hired Jeff Greenberg as its new GM.

Greenberg was most recently with the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks as an associate general manager, where he gained experience in all facets of hockey and oversaw strategic systems in hockey operations.

He will report to the president of baseball operations, Scott Harris.

"Throughout this search, it was important for me to find someone who can fit seamlessly into the culture we’re building here," said Harris. "I also wanted to bring in someone with a fresh perspective and new ideas that could challenge us on a daily basis and make us all better as we strive towards our goal of bringing postseason baseball back to Detroit."

Before he joined the Blackhawks, Greenberg spent 11 seasons with the Chicago Cubs as an assistant general manager and was with the team for its 2016 World Series championship.

"It’s an extraordinary honor to take on this role with one of the most historic franchises in Major League Baseball," said Greenberg. "Throughout my conversations with Scott, Chris Ilitch [principal owner], and the rest of the team with the Tigers, it became clear that this organization is headed in a great direction with an incredible culture of development and innovation that I’m excited to be part of. Another constant message in those conversations was that Tigers fans want to see winning baseball deep into October. I’m excited to get to work with our front office on off-season and longer-term plans to make that our reality."

Greenberg is the 20th person to serve as general manager since the Tigers became a charter member of the American League in 1901.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Tigers were third in the American League Central Division with a 71-81 record. While it is an improvement from 2022, the Tigers are likely headed for their seventh straight losing season.
