The Windsor Spitfires have confirmed the loss of a coach who helped guide the OHL club to two Memorial Cup titles.
Bob Jones, a former associate and head coach with the Spitfires, died on Friday following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. He was 54.
"'Jonesy' was a tremendous coach and had an infectious personality, he cared about the game of hockey, his players, and his family," read a statement from the Spitfires. "Bob was courageous and made extraordinary efforts to raise funds and awareness for ALS research in Canada. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time."
Jones was most recently an assistant coach with the NHL's Ottawa Senators, joining the team before the 2019-20 season. He announced his ALS diagnosis in December 2022, and became an advocate for ALS research. The Senators said Jones continued to work through the start of this past season.
The Sault Ste. Marie native was on Bob Boughner's staff in Windsor when the Spitfires won back-to-back Memorial Cup championships in 2009 and 2010. Jones then became the head coach for the 2010-11 season.
He is survived by his wife Paige, and two adult children, Blake and Brianna.
Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.
