A Leamington woman is far from home and facing multiple charges in a massive weapons smuggling operation.
The sheriff's office in Angelina County, Texas, arrested Jahtaya O'Day Jah-Kiara Hamilton on Wednesday on multiple drug and weapons charges.
According to the county's jail roster, Hamilton is being held on four counts of theft of a weapon and one count of possessing a prohibited weapon. She is expected to be turned over to federal investigators.
East Texas television station KTRE reported on Wednesday that Hamilton had hired a Lyft and was traveling in it when the vehicle was stopped by an Angelina County deputy for speeding.
The deputy noticed a strong odour of marijuana in the vehicle. Upon searching the car, cannabis was found inside. Two large bags were found in the trunk. The TV station reported that Hamilton allegedly told the deputy the bags were hers.
Inside the bags were multiple semi-automatic pistols, a short-barreled rifle, magazines, and ammunition.
Police told KTRE that the items were stolen in the Houston area. Hamilton had hired the Lyft to drive her to Arkansas. From there, she was due to work her way back to Canada.
The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is assisting in the investigation.
The charges have not been proven in court.
