LaSalle police issue warning after attempted bank card fraud

LaSalle police say residents should be wary after someone was nearly the victim of a bank card scam.

A resident called police on Sunday evening, saying they were contacted by someone claiming to be from their bank, who told the would-be victim that their bank card had been compromised.

The resident was told by the caller to cut their card into pieces, place the pieces in an envelope, and wait for a courier to come collect it and return it to the bank.

Sensing something fishy, the resident called their bank, which confirmed that the previous call was fraudulent. Shortly afterwards, an Uber driver appeared at the home to collect the envelope.

Police say scams like this are getting more common.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from your bank, police say you should always verify the information by visiting the bank in person or calling the bank's customer service line. Never give out any personal information over the phone, no matter how much the caller may already have.

LaSalle police add that if you believe the call is fraudulent, don't engage. Hang up and verify with your bank.

Banks will never send a courier to your home or business to collect a bank card that has been compromised.
