Police vow to continue support for Glengarry neighbourhood in 2025

Windsor Police say an initiative started four months ago to address crime and improve the quality of life in the Glengarry neighbourhood continues to make a positive impact, and they won't be letting their foot off the gas in 2025.

This past August, police have maintained a sustained presence in the troubled neighbourhood and partnered with the Windsor Essex Community Health Centre, Family Services Windsor-Essex, the Canadian Mental Health Association Windsor-Essex County Branch, and Windsor Regional Hospital. It also teamed up with Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital on a Crisis Response Team.

Several events have been held in the neighbourhood. Over the past few months, the health unit has distributed 335 drug test strips, 105 referrals were made to financial literacy and assistance programs, 89 residents in crisis received support from the CMHA, and 32 residents sought help withdrawing from substances.

At its most recent event on December 18, police had nearly a thousand service interactions and provided more than 400 holiday meals.

The effort is paying off. Crimes against people are down by 32 per cent, drug-related crimes have fallen by 30 per cent, and property crimes have dropped by 10 per cent.

Police say building trust with residents, ensuring community support workers can operate safely and effectively, and addressing emerging issues promptly.

"This initiative demonstrates the tremendous impact of collaboration between police and partners in health and human services," said Police Chief Jason Bellaire. "By addressing both crime and its root causes, we are creating a safer and healthier environment for everyone."

The initiative has been so successful that police are adopting a similar approach at another trouble spot in the city, 920 Ouellette.
